The Rangers parted ways with the anchor of their rotation when they sent veteran Cole Hamels to the Chicago Cubs at the deadline. After acquiring Eddie Butler and Rollie Lacy, we now know the final piece of the deal. The Rangers will receive 17 year old outfielder Alexander Ovalles.
Ovalles is a left handed hitter that signed with the Cubs out of the Dominican Republic. He has been playing in the Dominican Summer League this season where he is slashing .316/.430/.368 over 94 plate appearances. The 6’0 180 pounder has also walked 16 times this season to just 14 strikeouts. Ovalles wasn’t a headline name during last year’s international signing period and he probably won’t break any top prospect lists anytime soon. At just 17 and virtually no film on him, the jury is still out on his potential. We will certainly keep you updated on his stats as we can expect him to continue in the DSL with the Rangers.
